Let's meet – Jaryna, Estonian Refugee Council volunteer

Born in Kyiv but moved to Estonia in 1974, Jarõna has been answering the help-line as a volunteer at the Estonian Refugee Council since March 9. She has consistently helped to bring clarity to the confusing world and has been of great help both to ordinary citizens and officials. In addition to answering calls five days a week, Jaryna helped find shelter in Estonia for eight refugees and two dogs, who she takes care of to this day.

Let’s Meet - Anastasia from Ukraine has Joined the Estonian Refugee Council’s Team

The journey of 21-year-old Anastasia from Ukraine to Estonia started on 14 March from Kiev, which was suffering from aerial attacks. With the help of a volunteer, she reached the Polish border with her friends, where they crossed on foot. They gathered strength to move forward in Poland, until on 20 March they managed to get bus tickets to Estonia. The journey was long and cold - Anastasia forgot to pack her warm clothes in haste, so only one light coat protected her from the cold.

How Estonian donors’ money helps save lives in Ukraine

Kateryna has three children. Until recently, the family lived in Berdyansk – an idyllic Ukrainian port city only slightly larger than Tartu. "At one point, staying in the city seemed more dangerous than evacuating through humanitarian corridors that were sometimes shot at, sometimes not," says Kateryna. The family was forced to leave their home, but without a car and particular money reserves, the situation seemed inescapable.

ERR article: Celal Yildirim: freedom is warmer than the sun and sweeter than bread

Our project manager Celal has lived in Estonia for 2,5 years, speaks fluent Estonian and works as a mathematics teacher. ERR published an article, where he shares the concerns of war refugees who have arrived in Estonia and brings out how to help them: “It doesn't matter if you are a local or a refugee, people in need should be greeted empathetically and with a warm heart, regardless of their home country.”
